5 Tips for Winterizing Your Pets

It’s that time of year again in Oregon and if your like the staff at Pleasant Hill Animal Hospital you’ve started dressing warm. Let’s not forget to do the same for our pets! They get cold and wet just like we do and deserve special treatment. Here are 5 tips to winterize your pets:
  1. Animals need that extra layer of clothing especially little dogs who don’t seem to fight the cold as well as larger dogs, plus we all love to dress our dogs up.

  1. Just like in humans, arthritis affects animals in the same ways. They may have trouble moving around or be more tentative in the morning when they first wake-up. We have many beneficial treatments to help manage your pet’s arthritis. If your pet is moving around slowly or appears uncomfortable, come and see us so we can evaluate how we can make them more comfortable and improve their quality of life.

  1. Even though it’s not hot out, our animals need to stay hydrated during the winter just like they do in the summer. It can get cold out and the water can freeze making it difficult for them to have access to water. One solution is to give them access to a dripping faucet, which is more resistant to freezing or you can buy a heated water dish.

  1. It may be cold out but your animals still need to exercise for both their physical and emotional well-being. You may need to get creative how you get your animals exercise, as bad weather can play a big role in reducing opportunities for exercise.

  1. Animals burn more calories during the winter and need more food. Food is fuel and they need to burn it to stay warm. So, increasing the calories during the winter can be beneficial.
